A legal expert is warning the Australian government to get ahead of the rapid rise of AI smart glasses before having to play catch-up on privacy laws.

The devices are proving transformative for people with disabilities, but the ability to film strangers without their knowledge is raising concerns. Apart from a small, red recording light on the frame of some models, many people may not realise they’re being filmed.

Experts warn the new wave of AI technology could be smart glasses with built-in facial recognition, which could access personal information and increase the risk of identity theft.

In Nazi Germany, widespread spying on neighbours was driven by the Gestapo’s reliance on a vast network of civilian informants. According to The Irish Times, only 15 per cent of Gestapo cases started because of surveillance operations; a far greater number began following a tip-off from a member of the public. The system was institutionalised through cell and block wardens, who supervised 40 to 60 households each, enforced Nazi doctrine and reported anti-Nazi activities to the authorities.

The modern-day Gestapo don’t need to recruit civilian informants. They merely need people stupid enough to buy and wear smart glasses.
