UK politicians on the left of politics are determined to ensure the public has no voice. It’s not only the Labour Party that is illiberal, but the Liberal Democrats as well.
A liberal Democrat peer has introduced a Bill requiring social media platforms to obtain a licence to operate in the UK. And a Labour Member of Parliament is proposing that the Government’s preferred voices, such as the BBC, be given priority on social media platforms.

Yet another sick attempt to control the narrative is being made, this time by the Liberal Democrats. Baroness Floella Benjamin, who was made a life peer in 2010, has introduced the ‘Social Media Platforms (Ofcom Licensing) Bill’ into the House of Lords. The Bill passed its first reading in the House of Lords last week, on 7 September 2026.
The Bill mandates that social media companies obtain a licence from Ofcom if they want their platforms to be available to users in the UK.
But politicians on the left are not stopping there. There is also a proposed mandate that social media platforms give prominence to “regulated public service media” like the BBC in their feeds while demoting other content. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy’s Green Paper, ‘Watch this Space’, suggests using laws to boost “trustworthy” news sources to combat misinformation.
To quote from The Telegraph’s article noted at the end of the Free Speech Union’s tweet above:
Lucy Powell, Labour’s deputy leader, wants platforms to be treated like broadcasters during elections because of the impact of what she says are “social media feeds decided by opaque algorithms, where falsehoods, deepfakes and co-ordinated mis and disinformation can spread at alarming speed.”
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy’s Green Paper, Watch this Space, proposes laws to give “regulated public service media” prominence in social media feeds, so that sources such as the BBC are “seen and heard in the fierce battle against mis and disinformation.”
Meanwhile, the media regulator Ofcom is imposing new rules requiring major platforms to identify and restrict the circulation of content suspected of being illegal during “extraordinary events” such as the riots that followed the Southport murders in 2024.

The Online Safety Act was merely the beginning. There is clearly an ongoing drive to stamp out dissent or any commentary that challenges the narrative that they want you to see and obey.
In case you were in any doubt as to why restricting free speech or promoting a single narrative while demoting and censoring others should be resisted at all costs, here are just two of the many good reasons why you should not trust the Government – or any political organisation, or the institutions and organisations the Government relies on to disseminate its narrative – to control what the public does or doesn’t see, or what the public can or cannot discuss in the public sphere.
1. It is now clear that the Labour government almost certainly allowed Islamic extremists, including the Muslim Council of Britain and MEND, to help draft its “Islamophobia definition” – now repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility” – but they have deleted the evidence.
2. In January 2023, at the World Economic Forum (“WEF”) in Davos, Rebel News reporters Ezra Levant and Avi Yemini confronted Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla on the streets with 29 questions regarding the efficacy and transparency of the company’s covid vaccine. Bourla refused to answer.
According to reports, Facebook (Meta), Instagram (Meta) and YouTube (Google) are censoring the video.
