July showed just how quickly an independent publication can come under pressure. We got through it. But simply surviving the next problem is not enough.
Back in July, The Exposé was hit by extremely high levels of malicious traffic. The site went down, articles became difficult or impossible to reach, and for periods of time many readers could not access the stories they came here to read. Thankfully, we got through it. The site came back, we continued publishing and our readers stayed with us. But the experience left us with an important lesson: we cannot wait until something goes wrong before thinking about the future of The Exposé.
Running an independent publication takes more than writing articles. The website has to stay online, servers have to cope with traffic, technical problems have to be fixed, research takes time, articles have to be prepared and published, and our work has to reach readers. None of that is free. Larger media organisations have huge resources behind them, but The Exposé does not have a giant company or powerful institution footing the bill. We have our readers. That is what allows us to remain independent, but it also means the future of this publication depends on the people who value what we do choosing to support it.
Our independence is the whole point. We do not want outside interests deciding what we can investigate, which subjects are too uncomfortable to touch, or how far we are allowed to question official narratives. The Exposé exists to ask difficult questions, challenge powerful institutions and publish the stories others ignore. July also reminded us that relying on emergency support is not enough. We are incredibly grateful whenever readers step forward during a difficult period, but we do not want to move from one crisis to another. We want The Exposé to have a stronger foundation: one that helps us plan ahead, cover the regular costs of publishing and stay better prepared when the next technical problem, attack or unexpected expense arrives. That is why monthly support is especially valuable. A one-time donation helps us now, while regular monthly support gives us greater stability and makes us less dependent on emergency appeals.
The Exposé is still here because of its readers. You read, share, subscribe, send our articles to friends and family, challenge us and support us. Some readers can donate every month, some make an occasional contribution and others cannot afford to donate at all. We understand that, and simply reading and sharing our work matters too.
