Mel K argues that while Americans celebrated victory and the return of peace after WWII, a new international architecture was taking shape – one built around permanent bureaucracies, intelligence networks, powerful financial institutions and international organisations that operated beyond control by voters.

Newman and Mel K examine the origins and influence of institutions, including the United Nations, the Bretton Woods system and the Bank for International Settlements, as well as the role of intelligence agencies, international finance, diplomatic networks, and unelected technocrats in shaping the postwar world. Especially fascinating: The National Socialist (Nazi) connections.
