Following Sweden’s 13 September 2026 parliamentary election, where the centre-left opposition narrowly defeated the incumbent right-wing government by just three seats, authorities have launched multiple investigations into suspected electoral fraud.
The primary investigation centres on Borlänge in Dalarna county, where the National Anti-Corruption Unit is probing allegations of “improper influence during voting.” This case involves Somali-Swedish politician Mohamed Abdukardir Ali, a Left Party candidate who unexpectedly secured a parliamentary seat via a remarkable number of personal preference votes compared with other candidates from his party. Reports allege voters were transported to polling stations and given pre-marked ballots, though prosecutors have not yet identified any formal suspects or issued indictments. Ali has taken a temporary leave of absence from the Riksdag pending the outcome. If the Election Review Board determines that irregularities affected the outcome in Dalarna, it could order a re-run of the vote in that county, potentially shifting 11 parliamentary seats and altering the final government majority.
Simultaneously, Stockholm police initiated preliminary investigations into five additional complaints around the capital, including in the Järva suburb. These probes cover allegations of vote-buying, pre-marked ballots and voters being guided behind voting screens.
Many of the 6 election fraud investigations concern heavily immigrant-populated areas where left-wing parties secured overwhelming support.

A Record Number Appeal The Election – Then The Media Talks About ”Online Campaign”

Over 15,000 appeals have reached the Electoral Review Board following an election in which several suspected irregularities were brought to its attention. At the same time, several major media shine a spotlight on ”online campaigns” – a shift in focus that now faces harsh criticism.
The appeals are unprecedented. After the 2018 election, roughly 700 came and after 2022, just over 400. By Monday afternoon [28 September], over 15,000 appeals had been received, while the Electoral Review Board had to bring in extra staff.

The Media Lifts ”Online Campaigns”
When the appeals became a record number, several media chose to focus on online mobilisation. Aftonbladet writes that an ”online campaign could be behind [the number of complaints],” while Swedish Radio claims that ”influence campaigns” are believed to contribute to the increase.

Chairman of the Electoral Review Board Svante O Johansson says that it is not yet possible to determine how much the increase is due to various factors. At the same time, the possibility of appealing an election is part of the Swedish electoral system.
A People Fight Back
Leopold [who is]behind Ettfolk.se, a petition calling for action against any reported irregularity, reacts towards the media focus. He states that nearly 1,000 testimonies have been reviewed, that things that lacked substance have been thinned out and that the remaining information contains time, place and what the person himself claims to have seen.
”This is not proof of re-election. It is a basis that should be tried.”
He also turns against the mobilisation [activism online] being highlighted as an explanation even before the information has been tested.
”Interesting that the non-political chairman of the Electoral Review Board is already drawing conclusions about why the reports have increased.”
Eos: ”We Engage In An Open Debate”
The conservative think tank Oikos runs a petition where people can express concerns about the election. Senior Fellow Carl Eos says the initiative is about opinion formation and distinguishes it from formal appeals to the Electoral Review Board.
“We try to be transparent with who we are and that we have a certain perception. We want people who are concerned to have the opportunity to express it,” Eos says to Expressen. “If someone anonymous spreads inaccuracies, that’s not something I stand behind at all. We engage in an open debate.”
In a separate post on X, Eos develops his criticism. He believes that the discussion in the media does not take the situation seriously enough and points out that the examination of the data is still ongoing.
”I might add here that my view is that the situation is not fully taken seriously in the discussions in the media. Swedish democracy is damaged. It is unclear what the long-term consequences will be.”
