Police Arrest Local People for Protesting Illegal Immigrants Being House Among Them
By The National Pulse, 8 August 2026
Protests have erupted in Thetford, a market town in Norfolk, England, after migrant men were placed in free housing without prior notice to the local residents.
The protests spanned several nights and resulted in property damage, clashes with police and the arrest of five people. The charges included public order offences and suspicion of racial hatred.
The protests began on Tuesday after it was revealed that a property on a family estate near a primary school had been converted into a house of multiple occupancy (“HMO”) for illegal migrants. An HMO is a house occupied by at least three people who are not from the same family or household but share basic facilities.
This coincided with news that the British government intended to use a nearby military base to house 3,750 migrants.
In response to the protests, the police escorted five hooded males out of the property. The police’s response was criticised as heavy-handed, while police officials rejected the characterisation, stating their response was necessary to maintain order. “There were some skirmishes, it was a spirited protest but I didn’t see any violence … We fully support their right to protest. I’d encourage people to protest peacefully and most of what I saw yesterday was peaceful,” said local Reform UK councillor Scott Hussey.
In July, Colin Sutton was elected as Police and Crime Commissioner for Norfolk in the first election victory of its kind for Nigel Farage’s Reform UK party.
“I don’t know what people in the government actually expect. If you put these illegal immigrants into houses in the middle of housing estates, close to schools, next door to people, into communities who have absolutely no say in it, then I think it’s a pretty reasonable expectation that the people there will not be happy about it and will want to make a fuss. The fact is we’re getting about a thousand-a-week of these people coming in on small boats and we’re running out of places to put them,” Sutton said.
The recent unrest highlights growing public frustrations over the British government’s migrant placement policies. This is just one of several protests of its kind to take place across the country. The fact that the migrants had to be escorted out of the building underscores the scale of public anger. The revelation that the decision was unannounced suggests that the government is aware that its placement policies are unpopular but cannot or will not change them. This further shows the extent of immigration the country has received in recent years.
